Happy birthday Grandma COBOL

Today’s Google doodle caught our eye. It celebrates the 107th birthday of Grace Hopper, a Rear Admiral in the US Navy and computer pioneer.

She popularised the term ‘debugging’ and gained the nickname Grandma COBOL after her efforts lead to the development of this early programming language.

You can read more about ‘Amazing Grace’ on her Wikipedia page. Our favourite bit is this quote:

“The most important thing I’ve accomplished, other than building the compiler, is training young people.

“They come to me, you know, and say, “Do you think we can do this?” I say, “Try it.” And I back ’em up.

“They need that. I keep track of them as they get older and I stir ’em up at intervals so they don’t forget to take chances.”

Absolutely. And our young people should push us too. Like Theo.
